Catching Up and Upcoming Events - Tue June 3rd

Hello Everyone. I want to start out by first thanking everyone for all their hard work, especially Beth McMillen who has to be some kind of cyborg with her ridiculously high work ethic.

Over the past couple of weeks we’ve had some exciting events happen.

  • We finished up collecting petitions for candidates all over the county.  A lot of them have shared their thanks with me and I want to make sure you all know you are very well appreciated.  One of our own, Wes McCarville, has confirmed he qualified by petition.  He’s a candidate for Florida House of Representatives, District 29.
  • Our blog has been nominated for Best Professional Blog by the 2008 Florida Netroot Awards.  We had enough votes to make into the top three and the winner will be announced at the Jefferson-Jackson Event in Hollywood on June 14th.  The Netoots conference starts at noon and the awards will be announced at 2:30.  In addition to that the Florida Young Democrats website has been nominated for Best Party Website.  The voting is still open for that category so please take a moment and vote for it.  Please also go to our blog and participate in the conversation.
  • This past Saturday the DNC’s Rules and Bylaws Committee finally decided on the fate of Florida’s (and Michigan’s) delegate problem.  For Florida they have ruled to allow all of our delegates sat each getting 1/2 a vote.
  • Today marks the end of Presidential Primary Season.  It’s been a long one with plenty of bumps in the road but that’s what happens when you have so many Democrats ready to have their voices heard and with so many candidates in play.  Soon enough we will have our nominee and once again our party can unite in an effort to achieve our main goal which I talk about below.

We are all participating in party politics for one reason or another but we all share the same goal and that is, GET DEMOCRATS ELECTED! With all the excitement around the presidential race we need to harness it into achieving that very goal.  I want Democrats elected from city government on up.  We have a lot of well qualified candidates and we all need to do our part to get them elected.  That being said here is the main goal the Brevard County Young Democrats will be focusing on from now until November: Get Out The Youth Vote.  I’ve selected the top 5 precincts with Democratic voters under 40 and we will be targeting them over the next few months.  Three of them are in Palm Bay, one in Melbourne, and one in Titusville. Below is a list of upcoming events.

  • Canvassing: this Saturday, June 7th, we will be meeting near the main entrance to Wickham Park at 9:30am.  We will discuss our strategy their and move out at 10am until 2pm.  When you come in the main entrance turn right at the stop sign and we will meet immediately to the left (along the lake).
  • Friday Fest: Friday, June 13th, we will be meeting at 5pm in front of Island Pasta (Downtown Melbourne) for setup.  Friday Fest is from 5-10pm.  Come on down, bring a friend, and show this county that there are Democrats out trying to change things.
  • 2008 Jefferson-Jackson Dinner, Saturday June 14th: Meet Democrats from around the state at the annual Florida Democratic Fundraiser.  There is a whole day of events so check out the schedule to see what’s happening.
  • Check out the Brevard Democrats Calendar to see other Democratic events this month.  You can also check out their Google Calendar as well as the Brevard County Young Democrat’s Google Calendar.

Upcoming BCYD Events - May 8th, 2008

Hello everyone.

We will be at the Downtown Melbourne Friday Fest on Friday May 9th from 5-10pm. Please come by and help out if you can. We need to make sure that the Democrats in these county see that there are others like them here and we’re active! We will continue to collect petitions along with getting people registered to vote, provide campaign materials, and have a little fun while we’re doing it. Our tent will be (usually) set up in front of Island Pasta on the corner of Municipal and New Haven.

We will also be doing another petition canvass this weekend in Palm Bay and Barefoot Bay. We will be meeting at the Wal-Mart parking lot off Malabar Rd at 10am on Saturday May 10th. Come on out and bring your friends and volunteers. It’s very important that everyone participates as there is less than 2 weeks left for qualifying by petition.

Thank you all and hope to see you soon!

Upcoming BCYD events - April 30, 2008

*** STATEMENT ***

WES MCCARVILLE ENTERS RACE FOR HOUSE DISTRICT 29

Wes McCarville, Vice-Chair of the Brevard Democrats, and former President of the Brevard County Young Democrats, announced on April 2, 2008 that he will run for the Florida House of Representatives, District 29. Here is the text of his announcement:

“After much thought and consideration, I am pleased to announce that I am entering the race as the Democratic candidate for the Florida House of Representatives, District 29. I believe the voters of the 29th District are ready for a leader who can represent their real interests. I will promote a vision of the future that will return economic prosperity to our region that includes public input, accountability and provides economic growth that is sustainable to meet the needs of our citizens. The present legislature in Tallahassee has not effectively dealt with the economic downturn that has affected all of our citizens. I will work to break through this status quo to bring about real change.

I propose an open government, accountable and responsible to the people, that actively promotes our strengths. We all know that our District has much potential for economic opportunity as evidenced by the growth we have experienced in the past. I will pursue policies that encourage economic growth by embracing our unique resources such as a well-educated workforce and newly developed business and retail complexes.

As your representative, I will aggressively promote America’s space program and maintain its reputation for innovation and excellence. I will work to attract additional private space ventures to the space coast. I will support policy to protect our region’s delicate ecosystem which is so important to our residents and serves to bolster our region’s thriving tourism industry.

Now more than ever, due to reduced revenues, we need an efficient, effective government that stretches every tax dollar to benefit our citizens. I will work to cut the fat from the budget while maintaining the services of importance to all Floridians. I am not beholden to special interests groups that have influenced some of our politicians to act in ways not responsive to our citizens. I have entered this race to bring a voice back to the people of our District.

Our citizens have long been ready for change, but they have not been provided with a real choice. I now offer voters that real choice.”
